I have a great passion for this game of golf. Fifty years of playing, learning, experiencing and teaching golf has not diminished my love of this game.
I love learning. I have never stopped learning nor have I ever stopped thinking about learning.
I am by nature an analytical person and as such, I am naturally attracted to clever ideas. My peers and my clients consider me an innovative teacher.
And, while I have had a single figure handicap for the past 40+ years, I’d never putted consistently. I used to hit the ball like a scratch player and putt like a 12 handicapper. So I decided to design a putter, a putter so good that any golfer in the world would putt better straight away.
After seven years of development and twelve prototypes later, I have made the putter. It is simple in its concept and its design. It is easy to use. When golfers try it they start sinking putts straight away. And it is no coincidence that my training in Mathematics and Science played a major role in the design of my putter.
As part of the marketing of this putter, I thought that there’s no use having the best putter in the world if you have a lousy putting action. It was time for me to learn how to putt really well.
It was back to research on what really works in putting.
And what did I find out? Most of what I read was guesswork at best and folklore at worst. Even highly regarded authors weren’t substantiating their work and quite often they were suppliers of evidence, not developers nor advocates of evidence based theory.
I quickly realised that you don’t learn much from golf books but that you have to read a lot of golf books to work out that you don’t learn much from golf books!!!
But now I know so much more about putting and my clients are reaping the rewards of my research.
I use the latest and most sophisticated equipment available in the world to help me in my work with golfers. The SAM PUTTLAB combined with video capture provides me with the tools to analyse a client’s putting action.
Now that I can obtain the hard data on the strengths and weaknesses of clients putting strokes, I can provide real, practical and very specific advice. On top of this research and analysis, I use the Mitchell loft and lie machine to adjust client’s putters so that they have equipment that actually suits them.
Now that I have all the research and the equipment, it’s time for me to help golfers. It’s time for golfers to increase their knowledge and deepen their understanding of the real principles of putting so that they can get on with shooting lower scores and realising their potential. |
